What does it really mean to put on the armour of God?
In the final message of our Ephesians series, Rev. Lex Akers explores one of the Bible’s most familiar passages, revealing that the armour of God is not simply a list of spiritual tools for times of crisis, but the natural outcome of a life transformed by Christ.
Rather than focusing on dramatic spiritual battles, this message shows how the real battleground is often found in our everyday choices, relationships, attitudes, and pursuit of unity. As we stand firm in the strength of the Lord and live out everything Paul has taught throughout Ephesians, we discover that God’s armour equips us to faithfully follow Jesus in every area of life.
Scripture: Ephesians 6:10 to 20
Paul concludes his letter to the Ephesians by calling believers to stand firm in the strength of the Lord. The armour of God is not an isolated teaching, but the culmination of everything Paul has written throughout the letter about our identity, our calling, and the way we live.
Read the whole letter:
The armour of God makes the most sense when it is understood in the context of the entire letter to the Ephesians.
Paul is reminding believers to continue living out the truths he has already taught rather than treating this passage as a standalone spiritual formula.
The battle is real:
Paul reminds us that our struggle is not ultimately against people, but against spiritual forces.
While the battle is spiritual, it is often expressed through the everyday challenges of life rather than dramatic moments.
Stand firm:
The repeated command throughout the passage is simple: stand.
God provides the strength, protection, and victory, but we are called to remain faithful, trusting Him in every circumstance.
The armour is already ours in Christ:
Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and God’s Word are not temporary tools that we pick up only during difficult seasons.
They are gifts God has already provided through Christ, forming the foundation of a faithful Christian life.
The real battleground:
The spiritual battle is often fought in ordinary moments.
Pride, offence, unforgiveness, broken relationships, selfishness, and disunity are places where we choose whether to live according to our old nature or our new life in Christ.
Growing in Christ:
Spiritual maturity is a lifelong process.
As we continue making daily choices to follow Jesus, the Holy Spirit shapes our character and helps us become more like Him.
Living worthy of the calling:
The message of Ephesians comes full circle.
Knowing who we are in Christ should lead us to live differently, pursuing unity, love, humility, forgiveness, and faithfulness in every relationship.
Key Takeaway:
Putting on the armour of God is about far more than preparing for spiritual conflict. It is choosing, every day, to stand firm in Christ, allowing the truth of the Gospel to shape our character, strengthen our relationships, and empower us to live worthy of the calling we have received.
